How to Perform Umrah (عُمرہ) – Step by Step Guide 🕋
Umrah is a blessed act of worship and a spiritual journey that can be performed at any time of the year. Below is a detailed step-by-step explanation:
Preparation Before Umrah
Purity of intention (Niyyah): Perform Umrah only for the sake of Allah (SWT).
Physical preparation: Take a bath (ghusl), trim nails, remove unwanted hair, and wear clean clothes.
Ihram clothing:
- Men: Two white unstitched cloths (Ridaa & Izaar).
- Women: Any modest dress fulfilling Islamic guidelines (not necessarily white).
Prayers before departure: Offer two rak‘ah Salah before leaving for Miqāt if possible.
Entering into Ihram (الإحرام)
At or before reaching Miqāt (designated boundary points), make intention for Umrah:
“Labbayk Allahumma ‘Umrah” (O Allah, I am here for Umrah).
Recite Talbiyah continuously:
“Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayk Laa Shareeka Laka Labbayk, Innal-Hamda, Wan-Ni‘mata, Laka wal-Mulk, Laa Shareeka Lak.”
Once in Ihram, certain restrictions apply:
❌ No hunting or fighting
❌ No cutting hair or nails
❌ No applying perfume
❌ No marital relations
Entering Masjid al-Haram (Makkah)
Enter with the right foot and recite the Masjid supplication.
When you first see the Kaaba, raise your hands and make heartfelt dua (your duas here are accepted).
Tawaf (الطواف) – Circumambulation of the Kaaba
Begin at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad). Raise your right hand and say:
“Bismillah, Allahu Akbar, wa lillahil-hamd.”
Kiss or touch the Black Stone if possible (without pushing others). If not, point towards it with your hand.
Circle the Kaaba 7 times counter-clockwise, keeping the Kaaba to your left.
Men: Perform Ramal (brisk walk with shoulders slightly raised) in the first 3 rounds.
After 7 rounds, proceed to Maqam Ibrahim if possible and pray 2 rak‘ah Salah.
ZamZam Water
Drink Zamzam water with the intention of shifa (healing) and barakah (blessing).
Make dua after drinking, as Zamzam is for whatever intention it is drunk.
Sa’i (السعي) – Walking between Safa and Marwah
Proceed to Safa Hill and recite:
“Inna as-Safa wal-Marwah min Sha‘aairillah” (Qur’an 2:158).
Face the Kaaba, raise your hands, and make dua.
Walk from Safa to Marwah 7 times (Safa → Marwah = 1, Marwah → Safa = 2, ending at Marwah = 7).
Men: Jog lightly between the two green lights (women walk normally).
Recite duas and dhikr throughout Sa’i.
Halq (حلق) or Taqsir (تقصير) – Shaving or Trimming Hair
After Sa’i, men should either:
- Shave their head completely (Halq, most rewarding), or
- Trim the hair from all sides (Taqsir).
Women should cut a small portion (about fingertip length) from their hair.
Completion of Umrah
With Halq/Taqsir, the state of Ihram ends.
Your Umrah is now complete.
You may now wear normal clothes, and restrictions of Ihram are lifted.
